The Cleaner Side of Superbowl Sunday

This weekend marks one of my favorite times of year. Growing up my dad coached football, so loving the game is in my blood. Some of the fondest memories I have are sitting with my dad and watching his game tapes. He would teach me the names of the different positions and what different plays we called. Needless to say, I have loved football ever since.

I am a Giant’s fan…so due to their stellar performance this year I will not be able to watch them in this year’s Superbowl. I will root the Seahawks on though and enjoy what I’m sure will be a great game with some great food and even better friends.

Most Superbowl food does not even come close to an ideal clean-eating lifestyle, but there are simple ways to clean up your superbowl menu that will keep you satisfied and not missing that onion dip. Here are some of my favorite ways to eat your way through the game and keep yourself on track!

First off – start with some yummy chips, salsa and homeade guacamole.

Way-Better-SnacksIf you can find Way Better chips go ahead and buy those. They are corn based but are also full of sprouted grain goodness and other yummy things. My favorite are the Sweet Chili – but I’m not sure you can really go wrong with any of them. Find a storebought salsa that is full of clean ingredients and make your own guac!

pineapple-guac1-610x300 My favorite is this Pineapple guacamole. Check out the recipe here. She made some homeade sweet potato chips to go along with it. If you want to avoid the corn go ahead and try these, equally delicious.

Next we need some wings!! Check out these asian inspired wings

 chicken-wings3-610x300 or get creative and make your own dry rub with any spices you want! You could also make a buffalo hot sauce for your wings with Kerrygold butter and Frank’s red hot! Be sure these wings are baked or grilled…stay away from frying!!

Potato skins are also a go-to superbowl snack. Check out this healthier version using sweet potatoes!

Other snack ideas could include:

Melissa’s Meat Candy (Sausage stuffed Dates)

Take some dates – cut them open and get the pit out. Stuff with some raw sausage (you will have to take this out of the casing if you get links) and wrap in a piece of raw bacon. Cook on 350 until meat is cooked through. It’s like heaven in your mouth 🙂 you’re welcome.

You could also make sliders and eat them off a toothpick or wrap in lettuce or make a “Fix your own taco bar”.

Think outside the box here and try to make a healthier version of your favorite snacks, or try some new ones!
